Rhetorical Analysis, Mickey Mouse - 962 Words

Rhetorical Analysis 10 February 2013 In the article The Masks of Mickey Mouse, Robert Brockway explains how Mickey Mouse was one of the most important cultural symbols during the twentieth century. The article discusses how mickey mouse went from being a slap stick cartoon character like all other animated personalities and grew into a much more complicated being. He was the sign of hope and escape during the depression and evolved even more into the dominating avatar of Disney itself. Brockway begins his article by describing Walt Disney himself trying to explain the dramatic success of his simply drawn cartoon character. Shakespeares Presentation of Shylock in the Merchant of Venice In the Merchant of Venice, Shylock is continually involved in the bond plot. This plot is probably the most intense story-line in this Shakespeare play. Bassanio borrows money from Shylock in Antonios name in order to impress Portia, however after a tragic incident involving all of Antonios ships crashing; the money has failed to be returned. According to their bargain Antonio must now give Shylock a pound of his flesh. Shakespeare uses Shylock is this play in order to provoke feelings of sympathy but also of hatred towards the villain in this play- the Jew. However you cant help but feel compassion for his situation as he is†¦show more content†¦When Shylock accuses Antonio of spurning him, Antonio replies with call thee so again and spit on thee again. This, is my opinion, justifies the revengeful side of Shylock. Shylock talks down the forfeit of a pound of flesh but Shylock really wants to profit from Antonios death, as he will be able to charge higher interest rates when Antonio can no longer undercut him. By the end of this scene we find Shylock bitter, greedy and also intelligent, however his eloquent description of Antonios abusive language and behaviour redresses the balance a little in his favour. His daughters elopement with a Christian and the theft of his money and jewels also give us pause for thought about our attitude towards him (Act 2 Scene 5). Shylock leaves the house he gives Jessica the responsibility of being in charge of the house. He strictly instructs her to keep the house and goods secure. This is quite ironic as whilst he is gone, she takes his wealth and disguises herself in order to elope with Lorenzo. This isnt surprising as in Act 2 Scene 3, Jessica talk about how unhappy she is living with her father. Jessica is ashamed of Shylock, which congregates feelings of compassion for him because of the fact that she is ashamed of him. Analysis of Against the Odds and Against the Common Good

The following two paragraphs are a summary of Gloria Jimenezs essay Against the Odds and Against the Common Good. States should neither allow nor encourage state-run lotteries. There are five major arguments that people use to defend lotteries. One is that most lotteries are run honestly, but if gambling is harmful to society it is irrelevant to argue if they are honest or not. The second is that lotteries create jobs, but there are only a small handful of jobs that would be eliminated if lotteries were put out of business. Another argument that would support keeping lotteries is that, other than gambling addicts, people freely choose to buy lottery tickets. This is true, however, there are misleading advertisements that may cause people†¦show more content†¦To support her side of the argument and to answer these counterarguments Jimenez share a few statistics. She tells us that the New York Times reported in 2002, that the state-run lotteries brought in a revenue of $20 bil lion dollars, and that this is only 4% of the states income. She also tells us about one study in a report from the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy that shows people who earned $10,000 a year bought almost three times as many lottery tickets than those who made $50,000 or more a year. This shows us that more poor people buy lotto tickets, so more poor people are paying the taxes that benefit education and social services. In the second to last paragraph, the author uses an analogy that compares state-run lotteries to tobacco products. She says that tobacco is harmful, and the state puts heavy taxes on it. They use the revenue to treat people who have gotten sick from smoking and to persuade people not to smoke. She doesn’t apply this analogy to lotteries but assumes that we will think of how to link this idea to lotteries on our own. Jimenez also makes a few other assumptions in her essay. She doesn’t explain to her readers what a state-run lottery is and s he doesn’t tell us how the process works. The director of the company is Kellie Lincoln, has studied Civil engineering. Before joining in this company she had worked at Daley Watson Consulting Pty Ltd. There she had worked on a large numbers of projects and she had also developed some intricacies of different types of structures. Since she had joined CERA in 2008, she has been working on a variety of major projects in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. This will help all the employees including the third party employees to make sure about the vision of CERA. This will make them support the companys vision as well. The company also may have to consider if their vision can be applicable to them based on all the internal factors and the external factor. Before providing the third party employees the HR policy, CERA also may have to consider all the changes in the marketplace to reconsider and upgrade their vision into something more (Bratton, Gold, 2012). The revised HR policy should also have the similar code of ethics for their regular employee and the third party employee. As the company uses third party vendors to recruit part time engineers for their project, the conflict of interest policy should also be upgraded as these kinds of recruits are often comes by nepotism.
